Platinum based Labware products are highly resistant to chemical and temperature based corrosion and can be used over 1000’s of samples when a few simple guidelines are followed. We suggest that when you first start using Platinum Labware you ensure you have all the tools you require to get the maximum benefit from the product. We can offer tools and advice so you can maintain your labware on site (small volume labs) or alternatively we offer a remake service where damaged and/or corroded product can be melted down, refined and remade.
General Guidelines
Reduce handling as much as possible:
Avoid thermal and physical shock
Never place Labware on bench tops
Use Platinum tipped tongs when handling hot Labware
Use Teflon cradles for cleaning/washing
Avoid contact with most metals, e.g. Fe, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb – particularly at elevated temperatures
Maintenance
Polish and reshape your Pt ware after extended use
Fusion process
Use ammonium iodide to facilitate easy removal of beads from moulds
Always maintain oxidising condition
When performing borate fusion on reducible matter, pre-oxidise first before fusing
Do not carry out direct fusions with caustic alkalis, nitrates, cyanides or nitrides in Pt ware
Cleaning
For routine operation, place the Labware into a beaker of hot citric acid solution (concentration and temperature to suit)
For a quick dry crucible clean, place about 1gm of lithium borate into the crucible, melt, place a grain of ammonium iodide and pour the melt to waste
